Shirley A. Butts, age 71 of Holly died Mon. Dec. 29, 2008 at home. She was born in Holly on Aug. 8, 1937 the daughter of the late Fred M. and Helen M. (Oren) Johnson. Susan (Lay) Ludwig Pretsch, 78, passed away on Sunday November 23 rd, 2008. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Holly on Saturday November 29 th at 11AM. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00-8:00 PM at the Dryer Funeral Home in Holly. Sue will be buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Clarkston directly following Mass.

Sue and Tom Ludwig raised their four children in Holly where she worked in the school system for several years. She remarried in 1990 to Ernest Pretsch and they lived in Arizona where they enjoyed the culture and climate. Sue always enjoyed new people, places, traveling and even earned her pilot’s license at the age of 60!

Surviving are her four children Lee Cote (Boston), Jim Ludwig and his wife Carol (Brighton), Scott Ludwig (Holly), Sarah List and her husband Don (Holly): six grandchildren Tom, Jennifer, Scott, Kevin, Liz and Emily, one great grandchild, Analeisea and her cat, Sam!

Linda Faye McBride, age 60, died Thurs. Oct. 30, 2009 at Brian's House of Davison. She was born in Palatka, FL on Dec. 3, 1947. Paul William Liscom, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 19, 2008 in Gainesville, Texas. Paul was born August 9, 1920 to Leila Fern (Mitchell) and William Ries Liscom on the family centennial farm in Goodrich, Michigan. He graduated from the Goodrich Agricultural School. On June 6, 1942 he married Mary Maxine (McKenzie) and they moved to the Liscom farm where they raised five children. Following a crippling farm accident, Paul became a door to door Watkins salesman and continued this career for 35 years throughout Oakland County, receiving many commendations and awards for sales, and had many second generation customers. He was a faithful and long time member of the Atlas Community Baptist Church in Atlas, MI. The family moved to Holly, MI in 1960 where Paul served as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 31 years. In later life he worked at a variety of jobs including a school crossing guard, a home assisted living helper, a veterinary clinic worker, and a public parks employee. In 1976 Paul married Lucille Ogle and then in 1987 he married Lenore Jacobs and became active at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fenton, MI. He is survived by his two sons, Paul, Jr. (Pam) in Texas, and Clayton (Diane) in New York; and three daughters, Mary (Norm) Olson in Alaska, Becky (Don) Yenglin in Cheboygan, MI, and Bonnye Johnson in Washington, MI; also 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Monday, October 27 at 11A.M. at Dryer Funeral Home in Holly, with Pastor Dean Dumbrille of Trinity Lutheran Church of Fenton officiating. Carolyn Jean Basham, age 61 of Holly/Fenton died Wed. Sept. 24, 2008 after a long illness. She was born in Sullivan, West Virginia on Nov. 22, 1946 the daughter of James and Hazel (Smith) Keffer. Evelyn Lenore Campbell: Saturday, September 20 was a sad day for the kinfolk of Evelyn Lenore Campbell, 88, who died in the early morning hours at Fenton Extended Care Center. She leaves two daughters and sons-in-law by her first marriage – Linda and Mike Schaefer of Brea, CA and Gloria and Danny Leffler of Northville; two granddaughters and their spouses, Lori and Ed Osborne and Kari and Tony Mano; a granddaughter, Lisa Leffler; and three great-grandchildren, Edward and Daniel Mano and Victoria Osborne. By a second marriage to Donald Campbell she is survived by two sons, Alan Campbell, who is publisher-owner of the Leelanau Enterprise, and his wife Deborah and their son Cody; and Stuart Campbell and his son, Scotty. Evelyn’s husband Donald is a former owner of the Holly Herald Advertiser. Her first husband was Gerald Ziegler. Donald’s first wife, Helen was a schoolteacher in area schools. Ziegler worked for the secretary of State. Both died prematurely. Donald and Evelyn enjoyed may sea cruises together visiting Hawaii, Mexico, plus many south sea islands. One of their favorite cruises was to the Hawaiian Islands where they visited the sunken Battleship from World War II, the Arizona, which is still sending short gobs of oil upward from it’s sunken grave. They met many friends on these cruises and learned a lot about foreign ports. In Holly they were members of the Presbyterian Church where Donald served as an Elder. He still is active in the church. They were members of the Walkers Club in Holly, which every Monday night walked around the perimeters of Holly. In her early years Evelyn worked on the elections board in Livonia, and served as a Sunday school teacher in the Lutheran Church there. She also was a doctor’s assistant in the Livonia area. A 1947 graduate of Holly High School, Skip served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1953 as a Staff Sargeant-Electrician's Mate. He married Charlotte (Jewell) Everly on August 18, 1950. Skip's stories and his sense of humor will be missed by his children; Caryn (Steven) Ellison of Mishawaka, IN; Sherlynn Everly (James) Clark of Holly; and Thomas Lott (Mary) Everly of Garyling, MI; his six grandchildren: Andrew (Laura) Ellison; Matthew (Johanna) Ellison; Benjamin Ellison; Jason and Jim Clark; and Thomas C. Keith Louis Naegle, born December 25, 1930 in Toquerville, Utah, died June 30, 2008. He married Elinor Fuhriman on May 9, 1953, and the marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple on March 19, 1954. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from June 1954 to July 1956 in the New England Mission. An active member of the Church, he served in over 15 positions, including Bishop of the Fenton Ward. Keith succeeded in a range of career positions: as a design engineer at both Convair and Sperry, he taught at Brigham Young University, he worked at GM Pontiac Motors as a production engineer and transferred to the Flint Engine Plant, retiring in 1998. He is survived by his wife Elinor, his children and their spouses, Julia and Robert Heck, Gary and Rosalie Naegle, Cathryn and Dean Welch, Debra and Richard Arndt, Patricia and James Welch, Robert and Tina Naegle, Bradley and Alissa Naegle, Paul and Mary Naegle, Steven Naegle, 41 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Andrew retired from the Great Lakes Steel Corp. in Ecorse, MI after 40 years of faithful service. "Son" as he was called confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age. He was a 40 year member of the greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, MI where he served in the tape ministry and sang with the Mighty Voice of Thunder male chorus. Kathryn Miller, age 87, loving wife of Sidney, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 9, 2008 at her home in Holly after an illness of 5 years. Her husband Sidney was her caregiver. Bruce Perry Van Geison, age 62, formerly of Holly, passed away on Thurs. May 29, 2008 at Country Meadows of Carsonville, MI. He was born on Jan. 18, 1946 at Mrs. Perry's Maternity Home in Holly. He was the third son of Burton and Evelyn (Oldaugh) Van Geison. He worked as an artist, a furniture mover, a janitor with Holly Schools, and on a horse farm. His avocation and first loves were drawing and making beautiful bird houses. Surviving are 2 brothers Duane and Gary (Mary) Van Geison; nieces and nephews Dewy, Twyla, Tanya, Flint and Burt; all the cousins from the Oldaugh family; Aunt Jackie and Uncle Fernando and Aunt Judy Van Geison and Uncle Ray Ranger; dear friend Marla Johnson and best friend Paul Sipes. Shirley D. Ryden, age 85, died Friday April 18, 2008. She was the beloved wife of the late Norman Ryden and mother of Viva Breen, Lee (Denise), and Gary (Michele). She is also survived by her brothers Clyde (Jane) and Herbert (Barb); 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Shirley was a lifetime resident of Waterford and was known as an avid sports fan and Rummikub player. Her claim to fame was her wonderful baking that she shared with everyone. Mr. Zdanowicz was born in Detroit on Sept. 29, 1920 the son of Stefan and Wladylawa Zdanowicz. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army. He was retired from Chrysler and is one of 4 generations of his family in skilled trades during the Post 100 years. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and a member of American Legion Post #225. Charles M. (Chuck) Downing, age 78, died following a long illness on Feb. 1, 2008 in McLean, Virginia. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sun. Feb. 10, 2008 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly. He served in the US Navy and he received an Engineering Degree from Michigan State University. He then became a world traveler as Chief Engineer for the United Nations Food & Agricultural Organization and as a World Bank Representative to the Far East and Central and South America. Gomer Euston Evans of Grand Blanc died peacefully at the Genesys Convalescent Center on Wednesday, November 21, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Gomer was born on June 3, 1922 in Mountain Ash, Wales, UK. Gomer is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beryl Patricia Evans; three sons, Timothy Evans and his wife Sonya of East Highland Ranch CA, Nicholas Evans and his wife Kimberly and granddaughters Madison and Camryn of Fenton, and son David Evans and his wife Erin of Chicago, IL. Gomer served in WWII in the British Home Guard. He was educated and worked as both a Mechanical and Civil Engineer, beginning his career in London, England and then moving to the United States permanently in 1963. Gomer received numerous recognitions as a professional engineer and taught as adjunct faculty in the engineering schools at both Lawrence Tech and the University of Michigan. Gomer and his wife Beryl raised their three sons in Holly, Michigan and were active members of the Holly Seventh Day Adventist Church, where he served many years as a deacon, choir director, elder, and religious liberty leader. Renee M. Smith, nee Tolley, age 93, widow of the late Austin H. Smith, MD, passed away on Oct. 10, 2007 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Renee was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 14, 1914. Her daughter, Kathie L. Duncan, with whom she has resided for the past 23 years, survives her. Renee graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit, Michigan, and also attendee Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit. She lived on the island of Oahu in Hawaii working as administrator at Hickam Air Field, and worked for many years as an employment counselor in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After her marriage to Dr. Smith in 1964, Renee assisted in his medical practice in Kent City, Michigan. Renee spent many years working as a Bereavement Specialist with Widow and Widowers in support groups in both Grand Rapids and Holly. Renee lived in Holly during her Elementary and Jr. High years and later returned to Holly for eight years. At that time, she worked with the Dryer Funeral Home’s Widow-Widower Support Group. Helen Amelia Leppala, age 91 of Fenton died Tues. Oct 23, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 PM Sat. Oct. 27, 2007 at the Dye Road Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1187 S. Dye Rd. Carl F. Meng, age 86 formerly of AuGres and Drayton Plains died Sat. Oct. 6, 2007. Ernest A. Garant, age 82 of Holly died Mon. Oct. 1, 2007 at Genesys Heath Park. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Fri. Mr. Garant was born in Flint on Sept. 20, 1925 the son of Alexander and Agnes (LaLonde) Garant. He lived most of his life in Holly and worked at the G.M. Ternstedt Plant, retiring in 1983. He was a polio survivor and the past few years was confined to a wheelchair. He was an inspiration to all of us in teaching us that you can overcome any hardship and live your life as if you had no disability. Most people did not notice that he had one. He managed Holly Little League teams, taught archery to 4-H groups, and repaired lawn mowers. He enjoyed bowling, and hunting and fishing trips. He especially loved vacationing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy; his 4 children, Kathy (Bill) Brody, Bill Garant, Norm (Debbie) Garant, and Lorraine (Paul) Bauer, and Ken Walker; 12 grandchildren, Kenny, Crystal, Robert, Brian, George, Holly, Lane, Steven, Vincent, Steffen, Brandi, and Brianna; 9 great-grandchildren, Logan, Drake, Caitlyn, Kora, Devan, Dylan, Alexandria, Juliana, and Emma Grace; 2 sisters Delores Winningham and Leah Allard. Seeley Tinsman, age 95 of Holly died Fri. Sept. 7, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Mon. Sept. 10, 2007 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly with Pastor M. Jean Love officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be from 2-9 P.M. Sunday. Mr. Tinsman was born in Holly on Dec. 22, 1911 the son of Leo and Marie (Everts Smith).Tinsman. He married Ethel Giles of Holly on July 12, 1936. He was class Treasurer of the Holly High School Class of 1928. He was a full time farmer for many years and he worked for the Federal Government Farm Program where he measured every farm and field in Holly Township. He was a loan inspector and performance supervisor in the Farm Program of Oakland County until he was appointed Supervisor of Holly Township on July 1, 1958. He was reelected every election until resigning on June 30, 1979. He also served on the Oakland County Board of Supervisors from 1958 thru 1968. He was a charter member of the Holly High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He played baseball until nearly everyone went to WWII. He also played softball. Mr. Tinsman was one of the founders of the Holly Little League and was a Little League Manager for many years. After retiring as Holly Twp. Supervisor, he spent most of his time in Florida. Surviving are 2 daughters Janice Mae (Gordon) Johnson and Betty Ann ( Richard) Messel; 7 grandchildren, William (Jane) Angus, Daniel (Alice) Johnson, Laurie (Randy) Olson, Carol (Jerry) Deren, Patricia (Todd) Hamilton, Michael (Dolores) Angus, and Linda (Randy) Hankins; 7 step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1great-great-grandchild; 3 step-great-great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Virginia. Jack Vernon Choler , 1931-2007, of Holly died August 6, 2007 after a short battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Jean; son Ron (Marion) Choler of Port Orange, FL; daughter Jackie (Lewis) Ethterton of Longwood, FL; step-daughter Laura Pearce of Otsego, MI; brother Jerry (Sharon) Choler of Sevierville, TN; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. He retired from Hodges Supply of Pontiac, MI. In the past he was an avid bowler and golfer. More recently, he loved train travel. At his request there will be no service. After cremation his ashes and the ashes of his beloved dog Brownie will be scattered at Port Orange, FL in the Atlantic Ocean. Richard A. Foley, age 51 of Grand Blanc died Thurs. July 12, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wed. July 18, 2007 at the Dryer Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Neuville officiating. Visitation will be from 12-2 Wed. before the service. Rick was born March 23, 1956 to Daniel and Judy (McNie) Foley and lived most of his life in the Fenton area. Rick was a jack-of-all-trades working in the transmission business, construction, residential and commercial painting. In recent years he traveled the country rebuilding restaurants. He had a love of the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trying to master the game of golf. Rick was gifted with quick wit and a great sense of humor, he lived the quote " wherever he laid his hat was his home". He was loved and will be greatly missed by his loving Grandmother, Virginia McNie of Linden, sister Patricia (Gary) Spangler of Fenton, brother Steve (Kelly) Smith of CO, nephews Garrett Evans and Justin Smith, Niece Kadee Spangler, loving aunts Carol (Ed) Anderson and Geraldine Estess, and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and Margo, a very special person in his life. As his family wished, Rick became an organ donor to give others hope and health. Rick was preceded in death by his brother James Foley, just seven months ago, who he loved and missed very much, father Daniel Foley, mother Judy Smith, step-father Ike Smith, grandfather Arthur McNie, grandparents Victor and Mary Foley and cousin Edwin Anderson.
