Norman J. Powell

August 18, 1933 - May 24, 2019

Norman J. Powell Aug. 18th 1933 - May 24th 2019 "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain" Philippians 1:21 Norman J. Powell was born in Detroit on Aug. 18th 1933 and died in Clarkston, MI May 24th, 2019. Military honors and burial were held at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly on June 5th, 2019. He was the son of Frank V. and Martha Powell (Pittman). He grew up in Royal Oak, and graduated from Lapeer HS in 1951. He met the love of his life, Dolores, while visiting a church service when he was 15 and she was just 14 years old. After graduating HS he worked as a carpenter at the D-Bar-A Boy Scout Camp in Metamora. His father, Frank Powell, was the Head Ranger at the camp. The Korean War was going on at this time and Norm was drafted into the US Army in June 1953. After completing his Army training at Ft Knox, KY, he came home on leave to marry his longtime sweetheart, Dodie Ann (Dolores). Norm was stationed in Germany with an army artillery battalion until his discharge in May 1955. During his time there, he played on the battalion basketball team, competing with other army teams throughout Germany. Norm's team won many trophies and awards. Norm's cherished memories of his army basketball teams victories were always brought up throughout his life. After discharge from the Army, Norman became a journeyman glazier (glass and mirrors). He worked for several commercial glazier companies in metro Detroit and eventually started his own custom glass and mirror business. Norm was always an excellent provider, as well as a devoted and loving husband for 62 years. He was the best dad to his four children, Kim, Norm, Julie, and Erin. He was a fun grandpa for his grandkids and great grandkids. He was truly kind, sweet, generous, fun, happy, and full of love and joy. He represented Jesus, his Lord and Savior, so well. Norm is now walking on streets of gold enjoying unimaginable splendor for all eternity with his beloved "Beauty", Dodie Ann, as well as many loved ones. Norm was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years Dolores Ann Powell (2015), brother Robert D. Powell, grandsons Jacob Joe Leslie and Brooks Stuart Patterson. Devoted father of Kim R. Gagel (James Gagel), Norman R. Powell (Lorna Post Powell), Julie J. Leslie (James Leslie), and Erin K. Grosjean (John Grosjean). Beloved grandchildren: Cody Vanderkaay (Corinne Vanderkaay), Wrylie DeLong (Joe DeLong), Jessie Patterson-Damavoletes (Kyriakos Damavoletes), Stephanie Baroni (Brandon Baroni), John Grosjean (Alaina Grosjean), Justin Grosjean (Kaleigh Grosjean), Alyxandra Conyers (Scott Conyers), Robert Gagel (Asia), Craig Gagel, and Tara Hambrick (Brad). Also a loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews
