Sally S. Diehl

Sally S. Diehl, age 84, of Holly, MI passed away on February 2, 2023 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was born in East Tawas, MI on September 2, 1938 to her parents Martin and Helen (Squires) McCormick. Sally was born poor and was raised by a single mom in a house with no running water in the World War II era, and that is where her strong foundation originated. She worked odd jobs in her early years to help support her mother and brother. Soon after graduation from High School she married the love of her life, Jack. They shared 50 years of wedded bliss as they raised their 4 children on the family farm. Her children gave her a lifetime of fond memories as they grew and thrived, and with each new life, the smile we all knew so well could not be removed from her face. Being a creative soul, Sally could sew, knit or crochet an entire wardrobe - who needs store-bought stuff? She had a passion for learning which only grew stronger as the years rolled on. Her favorite books included Autobiographies, Historical works and of course The Bible. Springtime was the time for sowing seeds in her flower and vegetable gardens. The return of the orioles she loved so much brought her such joy, as did the first flowers of the season. Summers were spent poolside with extended family and friends and her face would light up when the grand kids and great-grandkids would perform acts of craziness off the diving board and slide. As fall approached, so did the busy season at Diehl’s Orchard where she was involved in the family business since the 1960s. She continued to work at the Cider Mill until 2022 (she was in her 80s) taking only a few short years off in-between, to travel and enjoy exotic locations like Denmark, Spain and the Holy Land. Winter was a time to rest and a favorite place became Acapulco, where new friends and old would meet and relax in the warm Mexican sunshine. Throughout her life, faith was center stage. Her life was dedicated to our Lord and her resolve never wavered. She lived a purpose-driven life and to the end, she continued to use her time wisely on the things that mattered most to her. She loved singing in the Choir and religiously contributed to several faith-based organizations and missions around the world. After Jack died in 2008, she decided to go on a Mission trip to Honduras (she was in her 70s at the time) and her life became totally focused on helping those truly in need. What began as a one week mission trip ended after 4 years on the mission field in Honduras and Nicaragua. She became the house mother for several years to numerous young girls who had just become mothers themselves. She nurtured these girls until they were ready to be out on their own. Her wish was to continue to support and care for these girls long after her passing, and Jesus be praised, her wish will be fulfilled. The funeral service will be held on Thurs. February 9, 2023 at 11AM at the Ore Creek Community Church in Hartland, MI with Chaplain Allan Reiman officiating.
